National Museum Fernand Léger

Bringing together a unique collection of paintings, ceramics and drawings, the Musée National Fernand Léger’s collection allows everyone to discover this major avant-garde artist, from his cubist researches to the large, colorful compositions of the 1950s.

Contrasts in form and dynamism of color evoke the rhythm of the machine, the poetry of objects and the beauty of the great modern city.
At the foot of the village of Biot, in a Mediterranean park, the museum offers visitors a rich program of exhibitions, cultural activities (educational workshops, screenings, conferences, etc.) and audio guides in 7 languages . The garden refreshment bar, open from May to October, offers a pleasant setting to refresh after the visit.

1960, the creation of the museum
On the evening of May 13, 1960, an exceptional event inaugurates the Fernand Léger museum in Biot. More than five thousand guests flock to the opening of the first monographic museum in the region. Under the patronage of Picasso, Braque and Chagall, the inauguration brings together celebrities from the literary and artistic world, film stars and political representatives. The Fernand Léger Museum marks with its seal the cultural landscape of the time.
Not far from Biot, other projects devoted to the great figures of modern art materialize soon after: in Saint Paul, the Maeght Foundation in 1964 and in Nice the Marc Chagall museum in 1969.

1969, the donation to the State
In 1969, the founders donated to the French State building, land and a rich collection of more than three hundred works. André Malraux, Minister of State in charge of cultural affairs, receives the donation during an official event which ends with a gala organized at the Palais de Cannes festival. The Léger museum becomes a national museum and according to the clauses of the donation, the founders remain directors for life.

1987-1990, the extension of the building
In 1987, the museum was enlarged and studied and built by the Ministry of Culture by architect Bernard Schoebel. A new building wing doubles the exhibition area. On the east and west facades of the new building, Georges Bauquier commissioned Heidi Melano to make monumental mosaics based on Léger’s plans for La Triennale di Milano (1951) and for the decoration of the University of Caracas (1954).
Georges Bauquier retired as director in 1994.

2004-2008, the modernization of spaces
Renovation works began in 2004. The architect Marc Barani is in charge of the work to restructure the exhibition spaces and improve the reception of the public. The furniture is entrusted to Eric Benqué and the garden landscaping Philippe Déliau. This new layout allows a better presentation of the permanent collection. In a chronological clash rich in masterpieces, the visitor travels the whole life of Fernand Léger.

They are administered by the municipality of Cannes which are not constitutive, associated with the Suquet, one of the ten administrative districts. Located southeast of the tip of the Croisette, not far from the city, they separate the Gulf of Napoule, west of the Gulf of Juan, to the east.

The archipelago consists of two large islands: to the north, Sainte-Marguerite, the largest, famous for its fort which shelters the man with the iron mask, and to the south, Saint-Honorat, smaller, known for its monastery Each of these main islands is frequented by an island of dwellings, that of Tradelière and the islet Saint-Ferréol. The archipelago also includes a rock called Îlot, located at the southern end of Saint-Honorat, which brings to five the number of Lerins islands.

Chateau of Cremat

It was around 250 BC that the Greeks, following a military victory over the Ligurians, created Nikaia, the future Nice, and introduced viticulture to this part of the Mediterranean. It is the Romans who, creating there an important military chief town implant the current vineyard with the one of the garrisons, on Via Julia Augusta. It is there, along the future road of Crémat, that they dig two imposing galleries of more than 50 meters each to store the wine and the olive oil.

In 1902 a prosperous merchant from Nice, Antoine Mari, rediscovered these famous perfectly preserved galleries. Once again, they will serve wine cellars at the large building he will build above all while hitching up to replant the vineyard. Thus born the Castle of Cremat.

In the 1920s it became the property of Mrs. Irene Bretz, a rich American who began major development work to turn the castle into a mundane place. It will give great festivals or rub shoulders artists, wealthy families and crowned heads of Europe come spend the winter on the French Riviera.

In the 30s the castle is ceded to Pierre Thome. He will develop the vineyard, create and chair the winegrowers’ union of Bellet in whose name he will ask the A.O.C in 1937. that he will finally get on November 11, 1941.

At the end of the war the Château is taken over by Jean Banis, who in turn will work to develop the winery and perfect the quality of the wines, then yield the castle to advertising Jean-Pierre Pisoni.

But the real renaissance of the castle will occur in 2000. It is bought by a Dutch couple, Germila and Cornelis Kamerbeck, wine lovers fall in love with the French Riviera. The latter will enroll even at the University of Suz La Rousse to acquire the knowledge necessary to achieve his dream; become a winemaker. From then on, enormous works are undertaken with notably the construction of an ultra-modern cellar just next to Roman galleries which, from now on, will receive the barrels where the wines are raised. At the same time, Corneils Kamerbeck will transform the vineyard into an entirely organic A.O.C. Finally the castle will be completely rehabilitated and a French garden of more than 2000 m2 will be planted in ornament in the middle of chiselled towers and ramparts of neo-Tuscan style.

In 2013 he joined forces with Olivier Bettati and launched the construction of a 300 m2 orange grove where star chefs realized and revisited the Niçoise cuisine for weddings, art exhibitions, concerts, galas dinners and other tastings. rare wine. As at the beginning of the last century, the magic of the festivals of the French Riviera operates again at the Château de Crémat.

Night market in Nice

Night market

If the Cours Saleya is famous for its diurnal market, held almost daily, and the delicious accents of Provence and Italy, we also love his night market. No fruits and vegetables here, but a vast selection of original products. All premises are local, but here you can find creations for artisans, some regional souvenirs, and artistic compositions for example. Whatever it is, a pleasant atmosphere for a digestive walk in particular.

At the same time producer with more than 60 hectares of estates on the Côte d’Azur in organic farming, mill with 2 mills but also confectioner of olives, our house perpetuates an ancestral know-how in order to produce but also to select unique varieties .
In fact, this dual know-how of producer and miller brings us a high degree of demand for our signature vintages. From a rigorous selection of the best European terroirs, these wines are made only in collaboration with producers selected for the quality of their fruits.

PIOT FAMILY
OWNER OF THE HOUSE ALZIARI

In the 90’s, the Piot family bought the last olive oil mill in Nice from the Alziari-Nègre family. The company Alziari, then a miller trading since 1868, will become under the influence of the Piot family one of the most important oil house in France. The family bringing a new job in the house to know that of producer.

THE MILL

They use the “Genoese” method, of which we are one of the last defenders in Europe. After a slow grinding of the olives for two to three hours, the stone basin is filled with cold water; the olive oil on the surface is immediately recovered to be decanted. The rest of the pulp will be placed in the scourtins (coconut fiber filters) to be pressed. This is called the first cold press. The mill runs between November and March. They organize tasting workshops and guided tours.

THE BOUTIQUE DU MOULIN 318 Boulevard de la Madeleine

Placed under the family home for convenience and located on the site of the mill, this shop has always existed. Still decorated with many period furniture and traditional objects, it is the joy of the inhabitants of the neighborhood who, children, already came to nibble some olives.

THE BOUTIQUE OF OLD NICE 14, Rue François de Paule

It was in 1932 that the family decided to open a shop in Old Nice. The oil from the horse-drawn mill was daily lowered to supply the tin-iron drums of the little shop. Despite the years, the small universe of thirty square meters has remained an island of authenticity. It has become a must for lovers of local products.

DOMAINS

They operate several estates with thousands of olive trees in the heart of the French Riviera. With more than 60 hectares, our house has become the largest producer in the region *.

The work is done all year round, mainly by hand in terraces (hillside boards). They have been using products from organic farming for years; because one can not conceive of cultivating a secular tree without thinking of future generations.

For some of our best wines, they also work with other areas in Europe to offer fans, wines of incomparable finesse and a unique signature. To taste an olive oil Alziari, it is to offer an unforgettable Mediterranean parenthesis.

VINEYARDS AND WINES

Grown in the Alpes-Maritimes in the foothills of the Esterel, associated with Mediterranean climate and maritime influences, the Barbossi Domaine wines derive their character from the richness and diversity of its soils. The bedrock of the vineyard, Rhyolite, which gives the red colour to the Esterel, the clay and sandy loam soils and the use of excellent grape varieties (Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Rolle, Chardonnay and Muscat Petit Grain, Clairette) are the ingredients of our high quality wines, full bodied and fruity.

Aged 1 to 35 years and grown exclusively in the traditional method, the vines spread out over 10 hectares. With excellent sunshine which allows the grapes to be rich in sugar, in the proximity of the sea and typical Esterel vegetation that bring freshness and acidity, the Barbossi Domaine offers reds, rosés and whites reflecting the personality of this unique site.

Château de Bellet in Nice

A rich heritage

A special history The Barons of Bellet, whose title of nobility was granted in 1777 by the King of the Sardinian states, established their property on the upper part of Nice. This family, originating from Savoie, gave its name to the appellation, which celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2011. Indeed, it is one of the oldest AOCs in France.

Situated on the appellation’s highest parcels, the vines of Chateau de Bellet surround the historic family chapel. Built in homage to Agnes Roissard de Bellet, who passed away at the age of 23, this monument currently houses her statue. It can be seen from miles around and was constructed out of white stones from the former quarry of La Turbie. These are the same stones used to build Monaco’s cathedral, famous casino and oceanographic museum.

The wines of Bellet boast an international and long standing reputation. Thomas Jefferson said that he had enjoyed the “great wine” of Nice, discovered during a visit to the region. This notoriety still exists today, as the highest slopes of the appellation produce some truly top wines. Chateau de Bellet has made an appearance at important events: the Versailles Summit of Heads of State in 1982, the European Summit in Nice in 2000 and the NATO Summit in 2005. More recently,
Chateau de Bellet was served at the royal wedding of Prince Albert of Monaco and Princess Charlene.

The terroir

Rare grape varietiesBRAQUET, FOLLE NOIRE and ROLLE are the names of the varieties producing the wines at Chateau de Bellet. The Barons of Bellet count among the handful of winegrowing families, who after World War II, replanted old and very characteristic local grape varieties, adapted to this terroir, such as VERMENTINO B bearing the regional name of Rolle and used to make white wines. Or varieties such as BRAQUET N and FUELLA NERA (also known as FOLLE NOIRE), limited to the production of reds and rosés.

At present, ROLLE, associated with the terroirs of Provence, is planted in appellation areas of production. In addition, historic documents about viticulture always link the wines of Bellet to BRAQUET a native grape variety. Indeed, it is called after an old family from Nice. In view of ensuring further aromatic complexity, the vineyard benefits from a third variety, known for its crazy character, hence its name – FOLLE NOIRE.

Great wines

“ Benefiting from the afternoon sun, the limestone and sulphurous terrain around the hillsides of Nice, produces the best wine. Indeed, the quality known as Bellet is especially renowned. Bellet can be conserved for many years without alteration. Its finesse, as well as its spiritual force, allow it to compete with the most exquisite wines from the south of Europe. ”
Dating back to 1847, these words spoken by a member of the Turin Royal Academy of Sciences, are still valid.

Visites de chai

From vines to cellar .Only 20 minutes from the city centre of Nice and the airport, on your visit you will DISCOVER THE VINEYARDS surrounding the Chapel, and then THE WINE CELLAR, built in 2015, which is partially underground and semi-circular in shape.

The cellar was conceived for the reception of the grape by gravity and the ageing of great wines of Château de Bellet in optimal conditions.

The visit ends in the Chapel with an INTIMATE TASTING inside our secret crypt.

La Verrerie de Biot : 50 years of history

Table art: Biot style

For each glass, a breath. For each creation, a presence and an attention. A tradition that will always be avant-garde.
These are glasses that the glassblower´s breath shaped, as he drew inspiration from the molten substance, applying his skills and attention to create objects that radiate beauty, harmony and pleasure.A secret emotion will always be hiding in tradition. Glasses, jugs, chandeliers, vases: only objects expressing precision and rareness that cannot be repeated or reproduced leave La Verrerie de Biot.

Table pleasure is a major art. It invites, it gratifies and it brings together.
The glasses, jugs and pitchers from La Verrerie de Biot embellish any table enhancing the pleasure of get-togethers over a meal. The products come in all different colours depending on the seasons and the master glassblowers’ mood: Gypsum flower, lime blossom, amethyst, Persian blue, …… for the glasses, the jugs, wine pitchers and bottles.

They can be touched, seen and experienced

A family company: a unique know-how

The glass tradition in Provence dates back thousands of years but in Biot everything began in 1956, the year in which La Verrerie de Biot created the bubble glass, mastering the bubble and imprisoning it between two layers of glass to transform a defect (a bubble) into a feature of quality: bubbled glass

The Lechaczynski family took up the torch of the bubbled glass traditions in 1973 and today is still carrying the standard of art crafts high now.

The soul of Biot glasses resides in their bubbles, each glass is unique.

For each bubble, a secret, a breath, a tradition.

The”Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant” (Living Heritage Enterprise) label was created on 2 August 2005 by article 23 of the law in favor of the enterprises to promote the development of firms in possession of an”economic heritage, composed, in particular, of renowned or ancestral, exceptional know-how, based on the mastery of traditional or highly technical techniques and limited to a specific geographic area”.

The label is intended, in particular, to highlight the value of firm sunderpinning French economic and cultural identity and to promote their renown nationally and internationally.

To be awarded this label, firms must meet each of the following criteria:
Be in possession of a specific economic heritage.
Be in possession of an exceptional know-how based on the mastery of traditional or highly technical techniques.

Benefit from wide renown or to have been established in a specific geographic area for many years.

La Verrerie de Biot is very proud of this label that rewards her know-how and unique creativity.

A trade of enthusiasts: the glassblowers

Glass does not exist without its master glassblower. Each creation requires special attention, concentration. The master-glassblower is a magician who uses the secrets of earth and fire to create glass!
He is also a craftsman and a great artist: the originality of an approach, an innate sense of volumes and surfaces, and constant creativity.
The “gamins” or apprentice glassblowers are between 16 and 18 years of age when they are hired at La Verrerie de Biot. They then undergo training passing through 7 successive stages or grades becoming master glassblowers at the end of 8 to 10 years. The organisation of the work takes into account the apprenticeship with the ultimate aim that each “gamin” should become a master glassblower. If the latter has the ability and desire to create, to express his artistic talent through glass, everything is done to help him till he is ready to fend for himself.

Not to be missed
The glassblowers’ studio (Free admission)
15 master glassblowers draw the living substance from the fire, blow, create and model unique objects before visitors´ eyes
Since the hall was opened in 1956, the general public has been able to visit it, encouraged to understand the mysteries of glass manufacture in Biot and admire the craftsmen’s know-how.

“The master glassblowers in La Verrerie de Biot are proud to demonstrate their know-how and pass it on to the “gamins” apprentices,” explains Anne Lechaczynski

A renowned tourist site

Perfume Museum “GALIMARD” in Grasse

Jean de GALIMARD lived in GRASSE in 1747 where he created PARFUMERIE GALIMARD.
Founder of the corporation of Glovemakers and Perfumers,   Jean supplied the court of Louis, the well-beloved, King of France, with olive oil, pomades and perfumes from which he developed the first formulas. Since perfume was used to scent the fashionable gloves, the industries literally grew together hand in hand.

Jean de Galimard was Lord of SERANON and related to the Count of Thorenc. For over 266 years, PARFUMERIE GALIMARD has been following the same traditions as its renowned founder and currently uses the very processes which made its name famous.

As in the past, our source is the natural resources of Grasse:  jasmine, rose, lavender, orange flower, and tuberose…… all from which we obtain our rich scents. Only the use of traditional methods can guarantee the materials incomparable fine quality.
