Gairaut District

District north of the centre of Nice on the hill of Gairaut .Territory with agricultural vocation (many olive trees ) became residential with a superb view of the sea and the city of Nice.

Waterfall of Gairaut

Perched on the hill of Gairaut, it overlooks all of Nice and offers a panoramic view of the sea, the airport and its famous neighbour, the hill of the Castle. Historically, it was created to commemorate the arrival of water in Nice via the Vésubie canal in 1883. The Cascade de Gairaut is surmounted by a pretty alpine chalet, the guard house. Although this one is inaccessible, it is possible to cross the cave. Inside, as outside, everything is made of fake rocks, fake wood and fake stalactites.

.At the beginning of the 20th century, the waterfall was an essential stop on the excursion circuits of the Nice region, and the tourist guides and the local press of the time did not fail to recommend this site with its typical décor and exceptional panorama to their readers.

Even today, it continues to oxygenate the water of the Vésubie and to be a place of walk for many visitors.

The whole of the basins, waterfalls, rock caves and the chalet has been registered as a historical monument since November 28, 2013.

St Sauveur of Gairaut

This church, built in the district of Gairaut, is very old. It is already mentioned in 1441 as belonging to a nobleman from Nice, Antoine Brandis.
This chapel was maintained by various important families of Nice and served by chaplains appointed by them. Two dates: 1628 on the pediment of the entrance door of the church and 1741 on the facade above the arcades indicate various changes to the building.

Canon Garnier, who came from a large bourgeois family in Nice, became parish priest of the cathedral in 1735. Under his impulse and with his personal fortune, he founded several pious works and created several branches in the countryside of Nice.
